The Temple is purified and rededicated: “Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go to Jerusalem to purify the Temple and rededicate it” (1Mac 4:36). The people were horrified by the desecration of the Temple in Jerusalem by the pagan king Antiochus. They decided to purify and rededicate the Temple of the Lord. Its rededication was a most holy and joyful event. The purification and rededication of the Temple can be likened to the sacrament of reconciliation. As the purification and rededication removed the disgrace of the Gentiles, so confession and reconciliation remove the disgrace of sin from our souls. To what extent do we see the sacrament of reconciliation as not only a purification of our souls but also a rededication of ourselves to God? We are urged to purify and rededicate ourselves to the Lord. May God purify our souls of all sins and help us wholeheartedly rededicate ourselves to the Lord.
