FREEDOM IN PRISON

Life itself has not been free to be lived by many persons. Day in day out, we still move with our concepts, ideology, prejudice, etc that are making us to live as prisoners while we think that we are free. When people fight for freedom sometimes, they do not know what they need. When you look at the situation critically, you will find that they are fighting for freedom with a mind filled with past experience, prejudice, concepts, etc as mentioned above. And the more they fight for it, the more they become prisoners, they can never be saved.

Today I came across an expression of Plato: “One cannot make a slave of a free person, for a free person is free even in prison.” This expression made sense to me. It gave me a different view and definition of what freedom is. Freedom according to Anthony de Mello is not in the changing of external environment or circumstances. But freedom lies in the mind. One can still be in prison and yet be free, just like one can be tensed up while trying to relax.
