“The poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the feast in heaven. The rich man died and was buried, and in Hades, where he was in great pain, he looked up and saw Abraham, far away, with Lazarus at his side” (Lk 16:22-23). When the rich man died he was buried and in torments; whereas the poor man went to heaven. The rich man relied on his riches. He had not only distanced himself from God, but also from the poor man. With all his riches, he could not care a thing for the poor beggar. The wealth on which he relied not only failed to give him eternal life, but also brought him eternal damnation in hell. We are urged not to rely for our eternal happiness on the riches we accumulate, for they will fail us; rather, we rely totally on God. May God help us not forget that the rich man was condemned for eternity, not because he was rich, but because his wealth had made him indifferent to the plight of others, and give us the grace to be sensitive to the poor and complete reliance on the Lord.
